Ex-Cincy Mayor Blackwell: Secret Service Needs Overhaul

By    |   Wednesday, 01 Oct 2014 07:06 PM

The Secret Service "needs to be brought into the 21st century," says Ken Blackwell, the former mayor of Cincinnati and Ohio Secretary of State.

"Their mandate needs to be re-examined and/or reaffirmed and not only the technology, but the protocols that are used must be brought in line with the current threat," Blackwell said Wednesday on "the Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"There are some pretty simple things that can be done to increase the safety and security of the White House and those things should be done post-haste."

Blackwell was not surprised by the resignation of Secret Service Director Julia Pierson, following a knife-wielding intruder's entry into the White House.

"She is probably falling on the sword for not only one generation of inattention, but a couple of generations," he said.

"One would think that since the attacks or attempts on [Gerald] Ford, the attack on [Ronald] Reagan, that that is one agency that would be kept up to speed in terms of technology and appropriate protocol. But apparently this is not the case."

Blackwell, a Senior Fellow for Family Empowerment at the Family Research Council, said the next attorney general must have less of a racial bent than the outgoing Eric Holder.

"He's been most political attorney general in the history of the country. He ranks right up there at bare minimum with some of the more notorious attorney generals," he said.

"He stepped out of the tried and true practice of blindness in the application of the law and not looking at race, not looking at gender or ethnicity.

"He has ascribed to racial animus — he has ascribed racial animus to people who have objected to him on a policy basis and that's the most destructive view of race in the 20th and 21st century."
