Reports that President Donald Trump will slap new economic sanctions Russia, focusing on oligarchs close to Vladimir Putin, will do little to placate liberals who feel the commander in chief is too soft on the world's largest nation, former federal prosecutor Larry Klayman told Newsmax TV on Thursday.

"It'll never be enough to silence them, we know that . . . Look, the left has always viewed Russia as its mecca," Klayman, founder of the government watchdog Freedom Watch, told host John Bachman on Thursday's "Newsmax Now."

Sources familiar with the matter said Wednesday the U.S. is to sanction Russian oligarchs this week under a law targeting Moscow for meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

It would be the most aggressive move so far against Russia's business, affecting people close to Putin. But not enough to silence Trump's detractors, according to Klayman.

"It's not about Russia," Klayman told Bachman. "It's about destroying the president of the United States. So, there's very little they can do to placate these so called critics, and worse than critics.

"We've got [special counsel] Robert Mueller who's a real threat to the president and is closing in in a way that the president needs to take affirmative action and also defend himself better."

The sanctions would follow the March 15 U.S. decision to sanction 19 people and five entities, including Russian intelligence services, for cyber attacks stretching back at least two years.

U.S.-Russian ties have worsened amid charges Russia was responsible for a March 4 nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy and his daughter in Britain.
