Ron Paul: Secession Is 'Part of the American Tradition'

In light of the recent secession vote in Scotland, former presidential candidate and Texas Rep. Ron Paul says secession is "part of the American tradition."

"Ever since the founders talked about . . . independence and breaking loose and starting a new country . . . America has taken this position for other people," Paul told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"When we went into World War I, Woodrow Wilson was very adamant that people should have a right of self-determination," he explained. "They should have a right for their independence, and that was one of the reasons we were involved in World War I."

"It's been around for a long time, there's nothing strange about it," he said. "It's part of the American tradition."

In an opinion piece he wrote on the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity website, Paul said that "even though it ultimately failed at the ballot box, the recent campaign for Scottish independence should cheer supporters of the numerous secession movements springing up around the globe."

"I would first have to suggest we look at what we have now and whether or not there's chaos," he explained. "If there's no chaos, then there's no need to separate or be independent."

"Obviously, if you take a country like Ukraine, there's a lot of chaos in Ukraine," he said.

But ultimately the decision to secede "has to be a wise choice."

Paul says the right to secede in the United States "was totally demolished with our Civil War."

"If everybody were content, you wouldn't have 25 percent of the American people saying, 'Hey, maybe breaking up is a better thing to do,'" he said, adding that the Obama "administration hasn't done much to help alleviate some of those problems we have."

"We have economic problems, we have a third of our people that are unemployed, we have constant wars and looking for new wars going on," he explained.

"We know the finances are very bad, our educational system is in shambles, and people think in the smaller unit of government they can do better," he said.

"The conditions get people thinking about that," he added. "If it were a perfect society and everybody was doing well, I don't even think the discussion would be out there."
