Ric Grenell to Newsmax: Now US Has 'Indicted the Opposition Leader'

By    |   Friday, 31 March 2023 10:18 AM EDT

The indictment against former President Donald Trump is "weak," but Democrats "want the circus" and the power to "rough" him up so he cannot run for the presidency in 2024, Ric Grenell told Newsmax on Thursday night.

"What people need to understand is that this case is going to fall apart, but Democrats don't care about that," Grenell, a former U.S. ambassador and acting national intelligence director during Trump's administration, told "Rob Schmitt Tonight." "Let's be very clear: The Democratic Party has indicted the opposition leader."

The exact charges Trump is facing have not yet been released, as the indictment remains sealed, but Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's investigation centers around Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen and adult film star Stormy Daniels, who Cohen paid $130,000 in hush money over her claims of an alleged affair with Trump.

The money was transferred to her less than two weeks before the 2016 election, and after Trump won, he reimbursed Cohen. The former president has admitted to reimbursing Cohen but denied he had an affair with Daniels.

But Grenell said that as someone who spent 12 years at the State Department, he is "saddened" Trump has been indicted when the United States has condemned other countries that indicted their political opponents.

"And now the Democrats have done it," he said. "They've taken away the ability of the United States to condemn this and other countries when it really does happen."

Grenell also accused the media of "cheerleading" for an indictment and for standing by when cities declared themselves above the law when they declared themselves as "sanctuary" locations.

"Now, we're seeing the consequences of that," he said. "[Democrats] are willing to do anything because the media allows them to do it."

Grenell also called on Republicans to "unite" behind Trump and stop being distracted "by scare tactics on abortion or trans talk" but instead to understand there is an attack on "dissenting information in this country."

"The Democrats want to control everything," he said. "Unite, get behind Donald Trump. That is the only way to defeat this system."

This also means the other two declared GOP presidential candidates, former Amb. and Gov. Nikki Haley and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, should drop out of the race and announce their support for Trump, Grenell said.

"We should unify as a party, and we should say we are not going to allow this to happen to the United States of America," he said. "I think for the people who maybe have been on the fence about Trump, maybe they don't like mean tweets or something, I think they have to understand that you have to stop asking Donald Trump to be a nice guy because nice guys are what the Democrats want – they want us Republicans to take this high road somehow, and they don't want a fighter," Grenell said,

Grenell added he keeps hearing Democrats saying nobody is above the law, but that is "so crazy and ridiculous to hear from the party that created sanctuary cities."

"It's really important to understand what the Democrats are doing to Republicans," he continued. "You're naive to think that this is just about Donald Trump. This is about every single Republican – anyone who challenges the power of the Democrats."
