Raymond Flynn: Leaders Need to be More Concerned With Safety

By    |   Tuesday, 23 September 2014 10:51 AM

The people of Boston are fed up with politicians' prevailing concern with political correctness to the detriment of the safety of its residents, former Boston Mayor Ray Flynn said Tuesday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum."

"I'm a Democrat and you know, supposedly this is a conservative issue that is more concerned about it, but if you collectively look at the people of Boston and its surrounding area, they're all concerned," Flynn said. "Our problem is we can't get our leaders to understand the severity of this issue and you're right, the issue of political correctness prevails this attitude not only in Boston, but throughout the United States."

The government, prior to the Boston Marathon bombing, should have had "a greater awareness of human intelligence, what's going on in the Middle East, the rise of these extremist groups, terrorist groups, ISIS and not only al-Qaida, but now ISIS and the threats, not only the threats, but the proclamations that they issued saying that they wanted to destroy the United States," Flynn said. "I mean, how much more do you have to hear than when people talk that they want to destroy Israel, they want to destroy the United States?"

He pointed out that there could be countless potential terrorists enrolled in colleges and universities in the United States' largest metropolitan cities.

"In Boston for example, we have a lot of students here, a lot of foreign students that come from all over the world including many of these nations where these radical Islamic groups are from and we even allowed people to go back and forth like the terrorist bombers here in Boston during the Boston Marathon," Flynn said. "That had to end."

"We are kind of lax in that regard, we should've listened not only to the warnings, there has to be human intelligence. That is the real key thing. I mean the people of Boston can't do this on their own. They depend on their federal government on their local government on their state government to coordinate all this information all this human intelligence and look, focus on the — you focus on where the problem is where the people are. Many of whom are at these colleges and universities they're fine universities no doubt, but by the same token there's a lot of this protest and demonstration, we see it in the local news. The media should've been more alert to it and as a result of that we should've been coordinating more of our efforts with the FBI with the CIA."

Last week, FBI Director James Comey said that thanks to the Internet, jihadists can indoctrinate recruits from around the world who are willing to conduct smaller-scale attacks here in the United States, Fox News reported.

"You're not going to be a global jihad leader unless you strike America," Comey said.

The Boston Marathon bombing should be "a permanent wake-up call that Americans must be on alert to any kind of terrorist attack in our home base, in the United States, particularly in cities like Boston and New York and Chicago that have a lot of foreigners coming in from these communities these countries that have already declared war against the United States," Flynn cautioned.

He is pleased that the White House and Congress have finally responded to public pressure to take action in the form of airstrikes against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS and ISIL.

"They couldn't sit back and go on vacation and allow the atrocities that were taking place in Iraq and throughout the Middle East to continue," he said. "The beheadings and the notoriety and the publicity that generated around those incidents, the persecution and torture of Christians in Iraq has culminated in a wave of outrage coming from the United States."
