Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has "not been doing his constitutional word to protect Americans" and has "abdicated his duty" to protect Texans, and it is time for him to be impeached, Rep. Randy Weber said on Newsmax Sunday, after House Republicans unveiled two articles of impeachment against the secretary.
"He has violated his oath to defend and protect," the Texas Republican told Newsmax's "Sunday Report," predicting that the "crazy left" will say the push to oust Mayorkas is political.
The Republican-controlled House Homeland Security Committee has set a vote for Tuesday on the articles of impeachment, after which they will head to the full House, where speaker Mike Johnson has said a vote will take place as soon as possible.
"The president and the vice president been going around, saying that Republicans are trying to make this open border a campaign issue," said Weber. "They've been doing this for three-plus years and American people are tired of it.
"You know 64% of Americans are saying this is the No. 1 issue so I think you're going to see this get some traction."
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 last week to allow federal officials cut razor wire put in place at the border by order of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, but Weber said Sunday Texas has the right of self-defense, as does any state.
"When this country was founded, 13 colonies, which ultimately became the 13 states, created the federal government, not the other way around," said Weber. "And when they won't do their job, you better believe it's up to each individual state to step in and do its job."
Abbott has vowed to disobey the Supreme Court's ruling, and Weber said he's "1,000% behind" him.
"Texas has two-thirds of the border," said Weber. "We're seeing people in record numbers. You're going to see some terrorists in there too. There are going to be terrorists if we don't fix this."
But Abbott has sent a message to Biden that "if they send people into Texas to put their hands on Texas property, AKA barbed wire or any of the things we put there, if they try to steal our property, in essence, that will put them in jail," said Weber. "[He] has said that he's made it very clear he's not going to comply with the Supreme Court's recent ruling on this removing the razor wire.
"He said that he will continue to defend his state from illegal immigration."
Weber also placed blame on Biden for creating the animosity that is going on between the federal government and Texas.
"He refuses to reinstitute 'remain in Mexico' and build a border wall," Weber said. "This is something of Joe Biden's creation. He cannot shirk responsibility for this."
