The new poll showing Hillary Clinton trailing Republicans in three swing states spells "great trouble" for the former secretary of state and Democratic presidential frontrunner, says Dick Morris, a Newsmax TV political analyst and former adviser to President Bill Clinton.

"She's in great trouble and it's not too early because it's the beginning of a long trend," Morris said Wednesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Emails [from Clinton's private server] are going to come out at the end of every month for six months and she still has the [Benghazi] hearings in front of her and the debates ahead of her which will be bad for her. She's got a lot to go."

A new Quinnipiac poll shows that Clinton trails Republicans in three swing states: Colorado, Iowa and Virginia.

"This sets in motion the cycle … [where] Democratic Party voters say 'I'm not a radical liberal like [Sen. Bernie] Sanders and I like Hillary and I don't distrust her but, oh my God, did you see how she's losing the election? We can't nominate her because we'll get a Republican president,'" Morris said.

"[Vice President Joe] Biden may well be drawn into the race by this because it'll be like '04 with [former Vermont Gov.] Howard Dean. People said, 'Oh my God he can't win. Let's find somebody else that can.' And they found [former Massachusetts Sen.] John Kerry."

Morris — author of "Power Grab: Obama's Dangerous Plan for a One-Party Nation," written with Eileen McGann and published by Humanix — said next month's debate for GOP presidential candidates on Fox News will be pivotal for Donald Trump. But he noted that it's too early to predict the billionaire developer's longevity in the race.

"The debate will be very important. Remember, there was a period when [former Rep.] Michele Bachmann was going to win. There was a period when [former Texas Gov.] Perry was going to win," Morris said.

"There was a period when [businessman] Herman Cain couldn't lose, when [former House Speaker] Gingrich had the nomination set up … so there are these ups and downs.

"Trump has struck a wonderful, vital cord with the American people by the simple act of telling the truth and saying what he really believes. The problem is if your campaign is based on saying one strong thing after another, at some point you put your foot in it."

And that happened when Trump took potshots at Sen. John McCain of Arizona, questioning whether he was a war hero for his service in Vietnam.

"What he did with McCain was not even so much because he attacked McCain, but because he stopped talking about immigration," Morris said.

"It isn't just that Trump was telling the truth, it's that he was addressing an issue that nobody's allowed to talk about. Liberal Democratic union members understand that it is illegal immigrants coming in that depress their wages and threaten their jobs.

"All Americans understand that it is possible terrorists that are coming in through student visas and other stuff that are risks like the guy in Chattanooga, but none of us are allowed to say it and The Donald said it and that's his appeal.''

On Thursday, Trump plans to visit the U.S.-Mexico border, where he says he would build a wall if elected president.

"It's a good move for him because he wants to get back to the immigration message. There's no better place to do it," Morris said.
