Secretary of State Mike Pompeo continued to call on the United Kingdom to reconsider its decision to buy and install 5G technology made in China during an interview with Newsmax TV Tuesday.
Pompeo was on "The Chris Salcedo Show" two days after The Guardian reported that British officials may take another look at the Huawei Technologies 5G infrastructure in their country.
"I hope the United Kingdom will move back in the direction that the United States has and simply says the fact that the Huawei system is inexpensive on the front end, it's got a cheap price, that the cost is on the backside and we ought to avoid it just as we've done here in the United States," Pompeo said.
The full interview with Pompeo will reair at 5 p.m. on "The Chris Salcedo Show."
Pompeo noted that the issue with Huawei has been on his plate since he was installed at the State Department in April 2018.
"This 5G system that Huawei puts forward is a system that is fraught with peril, fraught with national security risks for any country that puts it in," he added.
"It allows too much access for the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party."
Pompeo said the U.S. has tried to convince several countries to steer clear of Huawei's 5G hardware over spying concerns.
"If you want your own people to have data that's private, that is secure, putting Huawei systems into your country's infrastructure is not the right approach," he said. "We've worked to help them develop alternatives to that as well."
