The Trump administration continues to support Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido while current President Nicolas Maduro imposes on his people a "man-made crisis of epic proportions," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Newsmax TV.
Pompeo spoke with "The Chris Salcedo Show" Tuesday morning and said President Donald Trump is willing to do what it takes to help Venezuelans escape Maduro's socialist regime and return the country to a democracy under Guaido.
"This is a truly humanitarian disaster, wholly unrelated to the current virus, and we're gonna do everything we can to stand up for an opportunity for the Venezuelan people to get their democracy back," Pompeo said.
The full interview with Pompeo will reair at 5 p.m. EST on "The Chris Salcedo Show."
"It is a man-made crisis of epic proportions that Nicolas Maduro has hoisted upon his people, and I hope the people of Venezuela with all of the good nature that they possess will get a chance to take their country back," Pompeo added. "The United States stands ready to do everything we can to make sure that democracy is restored in Venezuela."
Pompeo said more than one-third of Venezuela's population has fled the country in search of a new life away from Maduro's regime.
Pompeo also highlighted the Trump administration's position that Guaido is Venezuela's legitimate leader after he was declared the winner of the 2018 presidential election and was sworn in 15 months ago.
"I don't want to get out in front of any decision the president may make, but what this administration has done to make clear that we stand with the Venezuelan people is unprecedented," Pompeo said.
