Peter Morici: Chris Christie an 'Embarrassment' to GOP

Monday, 31 March 2014 05:20 PM EDT

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is an "embarrassment" to the Republican Party and should not be taken seriously as presidential timber, says economist Peter Morici, a professor at the University of Maryland.

"Mr. Christie really isn’t a Republican. If you recall when things were going the wrong way for Mitt Romney, Mr. Christie actually embraced [President Barack] Obama without actually endorsing him," Morici told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"He's an embarrassment to the Republican Party in a lot of ways. He might not have known that the bridge was being closed in advance, but the kind of people he had running around his office that closed the bridge would indicate the guy is not someone we should take seriously to be president.

"Unfortunately, anything can happen in primaries, but I don't think he's something that is going to happen in the primaries," Morici said Monday.

Morici said Christie is "about three slices below" former wrestler and Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura in terms of competence.

Conservative radio host Kevin Jackson, author of "The BIG Black Lie: How I Learned the Truth About the Democrat Party " published by the Black Sphere, agreed that Christie is not fit for the Oval Office.

"The media has given him a taste of what he's going to get with just the bridge thing . . . a lot more scrutiny," Jackson said.
