The United States, "as a democracy, … cannot be supporting a coup," Rep. Peter King told
Newsmax TV on Friday regarding the military uprising against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
"We have very good relationships with the military and the intelligence forces in Turkey," the New York Republican, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth. "We've had a very poor relationship with Erdogan.
"I would hope if the coup is successful, we manage to maintain that relationship and some democracy is restored.
"If Erdogan comes back in, if he overcomes this coup, I think we can see him become even more of an Islamist," King said.
