The United States has become "weak" and "rudderless," terrorism expert Pete Hoekstra told Newsmax TV.

During an appearance on "Newsmax Prime" Thursday, Hoekstra blasted the Obama administration's foreign policy moves.

"I think what we've decided or this administration has decided is that we're going to regress from our position as a world leader or as the world leader," said Hoekstra, the author of "Architects of Disaster: The Destruction of Libya."

"We've withdrawn in Europe, we've withdrawn in the Middle East, we have withdrawn in northern Africa, we have withdrawn in Asia and in each of those cases we've created a vacuum.

"This is not something that's too big for us to deal with, it's just something that this administration is willing to tolerate. A weak America, a rudderless America, a directionalist America where other people are poised to take advantage of it. It's exactly what Russia and China are doing."

Hoekstra, who represented Michigan in the House from 1993-2011, added that he believes Iran is "well on its way to getting a nuclear weapon."

Donald Trump, the leading Republican candidate for president, outlined his own foreign policy plans in a speech Wednesday in which he criticized President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
