Pete Hoekstra to GOP: Don't Count on Schumer's Support on Iran

Despite many in the GOP thinking that 13 Democrats will vote with them to reach the 67-vote threshold to overcome a presidential veto of Congress' rejection of the Iran nuclear deal, former House Intelligence Chairman Pete Hoekstra isn't counting on it.

"I don't think you're close at all at this point," he said Tuesday on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum."

"You've got to take a look at the language very, very closely. Sen. Chuck Schumer uses the word 'review,' which is very different than what a lot of Republicans are using."

Politico reported Monday that New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, an influential Democrat, has "strongly endorsed" a law that would "give Congress an avenue to reject the White House-brokered framework unveiled last week."

President Barack Obama opposes the legislation, known as the Corker Bill, sponsored by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican.

It would, according to The New York Times, "give Congress a 60-day window to debate the Iran agreement before voting yes or no or taking no action."

"When Sen. Schumer comes in and says 'review,' all he says is 'we just want to look at it and we maybe don't want to take a vote on it,' " according to Hoekstra. "A very, very different place for the two parties right now."

By using that verbiage, Schumer is giving himself "wiggle room" before he actually sees the final deal, allowing latitude to make a decision at that time about whether to have a vote on it, according to Hoekstra.

Iran has proven itself to be duplicitous, according to Hoekstra, therefore it's imperative for Congress to approve a final deal.

"When we were in Iraq fighting al-Qaida, we were winning. Iran came in, they armed the Shias, they trained the Shia militias to attack the U.S. troops, they gave the Shia militias and al-Qaida the equipment, the IEDs that killed and injured so many American troops," he said. "These are our enemies and they still are."
