Patrick Buchanan on Monday said Democrats would be making a "horrible mistake" if they claim a mandate and move to impeach President Donald Trump should they retake the House in November.
A guest on Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live" program, Buchanan said the ramifications would result in "permanently" antagonizing voters who voted for Trump.
"I think if the Democrats move to impeach Donald Trump and somehow they did succeed in removing him from office, you would permanently antagonize and alienate the people who put him into office. And you would begin to restore to power the very people they voted out of office," Buchanan told ATL.
"I don't know how long it would take to heal the divisions of bitterness in this country from that."
Buchanan agreed with former CIA and NSA director Gen. Michael Hayden that impeaching Trump would be analogous to a "soft coup."
"The Democrats will be making a horrendous mistake if they win the House and suddenly believe they've got a mandate to overthrow the government of the United States and reverse the election of 2016 and bring down the president, impeach him, and move to convict him in the Senate," Buchanan said.
"And I think the Democratic party would put itself in the middle of a struggle, really a fight to the death right now, between the mainstream media and the Trump White House," Buchanan said.

"And I don't think it would be to the Democrats advantage. If I were them I would let this cup pass away and say, 'Let the people decide in 2020 who they want for president,' if they control the House," Buchanan said.
