Ex-CIA Officer: Hatchet Attack May Not Be Terror Related

By    |   Friday, 24 Oct 2014 04:17 PM

Former CIA officer Joshua Katz tells Newsmax that people shouldn't jump to conclusions about the motivation behind the recent "hatchet attack" in New York City because it may not be terror related.

"We're still jittery from Ottawa this week, and we're trying to make connections that aren't necessarily there," Katz told Ed Berliner on Newsmax TV's "MidPoint" Friday.

A man attacked a group of police officers with a hatchet in Queens on Thursday afternoon before he was killed by police. The attacker wounded two officers, one is in critical condition.

Bernard Kerik, the former New York City Police Commissioner, said that he agrees with terrorism experts who have said that it's another example of an Islamic State (ISIS) inspired lone wolf attack similar to the recent attacks in Canada.

"There is a fine line between insanity and terrorism, and here, we don't know yet, the evidence is not in," Katz contends.

"We do know that this male has a history of violence, we know that his website has an Islamic prayer on it, but that doesn't make him a terrorist," he explained.

"We need to look and to wait for the connections that are going to come out of the FBI and other intelligence organizations that are going to really say, 'was this a motivation based on connections to Islamic radicals?' " he said.

He said that the question is if it was done because the man wanted "a press fulfilling way to go out of this life, or are they doing it because of faith?"

"If we are able to identify that it's Islamic radicals who are doing it based on a faith-based approach, then we can more clearly identify what's going on," Katz explained.
