President Donald Trump should meet with Black leaders around the country to show that he wants to learn the issues African-Americans are facing, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich told Newsmax TV.
"If President Trump were to go to the south side of Chicago, and meet with 15 or 20 pastors, and then meet with their congregation, and spend a day or two listening ... I think he'd be appalled at how badly they'd been served, and I think that he'd want to find solutions to save their lives," Gingrich told Thursday's "Spicer & Co."
"I think it'd be very healthy for the country and very helpful for the president. if he spent a fair amount of [time in] communities all around the country and listening to them," Gingrich said.
Gingrich acknowledged someone from Trump's background probably wouldn't know much about Black life in the inner city. And that's exactly why the president should go to Black communities to connect with people who often feel underserved and marginalized.
"There's no reason you'd expect a 73-year-old billionaire to necessarily have the same life experience as somebody who's on the south side of Chicago or somebody who's in the middle of a Black area of New York where there are predators who dominate the street because we pulled the police out. I think it would be very healthy, and it'll be good for the country to see that he actually cares about all Americans," Gingrich said.
