Newsmax's John Gizzi: May Have to Wait to Learn House Control

By    |   Monday, 04 November 2024 01:54 PM EST

Which party will control the U.S. House and who figures to be the next speaker in the next Congress may not be known for a couple of days after the final vote is cast, according to Newsmax senior White House correspondent John Gizzi.

Gizzi appeared Monday on "Newsline" and summed up the House races with one day to go before Election Day.

"With the House divided 220 Republicans to 212 Democrats, a shift of only five seats would put House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries in the speaker's chair," Gizzi told host Bianca de la Garza.

"In terms of the balance of power, that would also shift Democrats to taking over such key committees as the tax writing Ways and Means Committee, meaning on the matter of budget and spending. They would call the shots."

Gizzi, however, added that current Speaker Mike Johnson said he was confident of retaining the gavel.

"Republican Speaker Mike Johnson told Newsmax last week there were only 20 seats truly in play, and he felt confident his party would retain control," Gizzi said. "Several races thought to be safely Democratic are now tightening up in Virginia's open 7th District.

"Eugene Vindman, the Democrat known nationally for charging Donald Trump [for trying] to strong-arm Ukrainian officials into investigating Hunter Biden was thought a cinch to win. But even with a 5-to-1 spending advantage, the final polls show Vindman in a statistical tie with Republican Derek Anderson.

"The most certain prediction we can make about the House races is, well, we'll know Wednesday morning or perhaps Thursday."

On Friday, Gizzi wrote that a just-completed Ragnar Research Partners poll showed Vindman in a statistical tie with Anderson, whose strength has impressed GOP leaders.

Vindman is the Army vet who reported the 2019 phone call between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that led to Trump's first impeachment on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
