The lives of Americans could be at risk if the United States' southern border is not secured and system overhauls are undertaken, immigration expert and former INS special agent Michael Cutler told Newsmax TV.
Cutler was on Wednesday's "America Talks Live" and noted that failures in the immigration system played a role in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
"Interior enforcement is the key. We have sanctuary cities that aid, abet, shield, and harbor illegal aliens, criminals and terrorists among them," Cutler said. "I provided testimony for the 9/11 Commission. 9/11 was a direct result of multiple failures of the immigration system, most notably interior enforcement.
"Once they get past the border they are essentially home free. This is a disaster waiting to happen."

Cutler said he's concerned that terrorists and drug cartel hitmen could secretly be entering the U.S., possibly via the caravans of migrants making their way to the border.
"There have been a succession of congressional hearings about Iran's activities throughout Latin America through Hezbollah, which is a terrorist organization sponsored, equipped, and trained by Iran," said Cutler, who noted that some experts are concerned about Iran sending "sleeper agents" to the U.S.
Cutler also pointed out that the trial of drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, which is taking place in New York City, is so secure that the names and addresses of jurors are a closely guarded out of fears for their personal safety.
