Michael Cohen's guilty plea will pose a "political problem" for President Donald Trump, author and political commentator Jeffrey Lord told Newsmax TV.
Reacting to Tuesday's news Cohen, Trump's former attorney, pleaded guilty to eight counts on charges that included tax evasion and making a false statement to a financial institution, Lord said Trump will likely be impacted in some way.
"Having been in politics, I can say that sure, this is gonna be a bit of a political problem for [Trump]," Lord told "Newsmax Now."
Lord then referenced the case of former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, who was indicted in 2011 for using campaign contributions to support his mistress. He was eventually found not guilty and prosecutors chose not to retry him.
"They struck out, and he was found innocent," Lord said.

As part of Cohen's guilty plea, he claimed to have worked directly with then-candidate Trump to organize hush payments to women who said they had affairs with Trump.
The other piece of notable legal news Tuesday was the trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who was found guilty on eight of the 18 counts he was charged with. The verdict was in regards to bank and tax fraud, and Lord said there is a possibility Trump could eventually pardon Manafort.
"Possible, entirely possible," Lord said. "I heard [Trump's] comments and it's entirely possible he would do that. He was also saying that there was no Russian collusion when you're talking about Manafort. So there are reasons I think why he might do it."
Manafort will also be on trial next month.
