Pennsylvania Rep. Dan Meuser told Newsmax TV on Tuesday that election turnout has been as much as 50% more than expected in some places in his state, which should bode well for Republicans and President Donald Trump, who won 56 of 67 of the Keystone State’s counties in 2016.
“We have tremendous, tremendous turnout,” Meuser said on “Spicer & Co.” “We think in many, many polling stations over 50% more than was expected. We’ve run out of ballots in certain counties. The turnout is incredible, and we’re looking very, very good.”
Meuser, 56, a Republican who represents Pennsylvania’s largely rural 9th Congressional District northwest of Philadelphia, said counties such as Allegheny, a traditionally union and Democrat area which is centered around Pittsburgh and voted for Hillary Clinton four years ago, are more receptive to Trump.
“The western part of the state, in 2016, really didn’t go heavily for President Trump,” Meuser said. “Allegheny County was trouble. This year, a whole different story. A lot of it is about fracking. That area, we have … Beaver County is voting overwhelmingly for the president. Westmoreland County, Allegheny County, you know the Pittsburgh (Post-)Gazette endorsed the president just a few days ago.
“It’s not even about being optimistic. It’s about being realistic. We’ve got some huge turnouts occurring, Republican turnout. It’s looking very good.”
Pennsylvania, with its 20 electoral votes is considered crucial for both Trump and his Democrat rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, who was born in the eastern half of the state in Scranton, another reliably Democrat area.
Meuser decried the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, which ruled last month that absentee ballots that arrive as late as Friday would still be counted, and state Attorney General Josh Shapiro, who wrote on Twitter on Saturday that Trump would lose if “all the votes are added up in PA.”
“They’re doing everything that they can possibly get away with, but again, how do you beat back the overwhelming number of Republicans and Trump Democrats,” Meuser asked rhetorically. “Trump Democrats are largely what’s going to put the president over the top.”
