Rep. Mary Miller to Newsmax: Hearings on DirecTV Will Be 'Aggressive'

By    |   Tuesday, 07 February 2023 10:00 AM EST

House committees are getting their plans together for hearings concerning AT&T DirecTV's deplatforming of Newsmax, and the leaders will be working hard to get to the truth behind what happened, Rep. Mary Miller said.

"I'm looking forward to the hearings that we're going to be having," the Illinois Republican said Monday on Newsmax's "Prime News." "They're going to be very aggressive in these hearings because they want the truth."

She added that committee chairs, such as Reps. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and James Comer, R-Ky., are "getting their plans together" and the GOP conference has "great people and committees."

DirecTV customers call toll free at 877-763-9762 to cancel/complain

The fight is important, said Miller, because "it's foundational to our country to have free speech, freedom of conscience, all the five freedoms that we get in the First Amendment, which is absolutely under attack."

Miller's comments came after former President Donald Trump, in an interview with "The Todd Starnes Show" on Monday accused AT&T DirecTV of removing Newsmax "for political reasons" and called the action "a disgrace."

He predicted Newsmax would prevail against AT&T and told Starnes that "what DirecTV — and that's AT&T — did, I think it's deplorable."

DirecTV says it removed Newsmax and OAN as "cost-cutting" measures, but the company last reported profits of $2.7 billion.

It also claims Newsmax wants "excessive fees" that would cost them in the "tens of millions" of dollars, but Newsmax has denied these claims, saying it was seeking a fee of about $1 per cable subscriber per year, a fraction of the "tens of millions" DirecTV claims.

"This was never about the fees being excessive," Christopher Ruddy, CEO of Newsmax, said. "DirecTV's position has always been that Newsmax, of all cable news channels, should never get any cable fee whatsoever, not one penny."

Actions to Take Now

1. DirecTV customers call toll free at 877-763-9762 to cancel/complain.

2. AT&T customers call toll free at 888-855-2338 to cancel/complain for U-verse, cellular and wireless services.

3. Call your congressman or senator at 202-224-3121 and demand they stop AT&T/DirecTV's censorship of NEWSMAX — ask them to give you a date on the hearings!
