Sen. Marsha Blackburn to Newsmax TV: 1877 Model Can Resolve Electoral Dispute

By    |   Monday, 04 January 2021 04:46 PM EST

Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., and other Republicans have formed a "coalition" to offer a "pathway" to overrule the Electoral College by following the model set by Congress in 1877, told Newsmax TV on Monday.

Republicans will have "different members who were will challenge different states," Blackburn told "American Agenda." "Our goal in pulling together a coalition is to say, 'look, there is a way to solve this.'"

She added, "no one has offered a pathway" forward or a "plan of action on how to address" complaints about the Electoral College.

The senator said her coalition suggests following "the model that was used in 1877," when the Electoral College votes were awarded to Rutherford B. Hayes, who had won 185 electoral votes in the 1876 election, to Democrat Samuel Tilden's 184.

Democrat Joe Biden won 306 electoral votes to President Donald Trump's 232.

Blackburn went on to draw comparisons between Republicans now and Democrats following the 2016 election.

"The reason this is so important is quite simply: What did the Democrats do the day after Donald Trump was elected? They announced that they had named themselves the resistance, they were going to resist and obstruct Donald Trump every day during his presidency," Blackburn told host Bob Sellers.

"So that has been their goal, and they called him illegitimate. They've called the elections illegitimate, and they've done it for four years. So you know what? There is a way a constitutional way that is given to us through Article II. Let's make use of that."
