When it comes to shutting down the country over coronavirus fears, it's better to be safe than sorry, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart told Newsmax TV.

"This bug is nasty, and we're seeing a lot of people, unfortunately, losing their lives because of this," the Florida Republican said Friday during an appearance on "Greg Kelly Reports."

"If this thing spread everywhere, then all of a sudden, we're not looking at 60, 70, 80,000 deaths. We could've been looking at much higher than that,"

He added: "Then, I think the question would've been, 'What were you thinking?'."

Diaz-Balart gives credit to the coronavirus responses from various states and the federal government.

"It's a very difficult balancing act. I think the administration and a lot of the states have done a pretty good job balancing the safety of the people, which is most important, with trying to make sure that this economy doesn't collapse, and that's still a work in progress."
