John Yoo to Newsmax TV: Presidents Since Washington Have Sent Federal Agents to Cities

Mainstream media outlets like The New York Times have criticized President Donald Trump for doing what other presidents have done throughout history: use federal resources to protect people and property, law professor and former Department of Justice official John Yoo told Newsmax TV.

"These are not raving blog posts; these are columnists in The New York Times who are making these accusations," Yoo told Tuesday's "John Bachman Now." "In the meantime, presidents since George Washington on, have called out troops, have called on federal law enforcement to restore order, to prevent violations of federal law and to protect federal property, federal buildings, and federal personnel."

He said the Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee grilling U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr was a mistake they will regret making.

"I don't think that [House Judiciary Chairman Jerry] Nadler and the House Democrats knew what they were getting themselves into, because they're not going to be able to browbeat or attack Attorney General Barr for political reasons, because I don't think he really cares what they think," Yoo said.

"The critics of the interventions in the cities, the people who are supporting the rioters, are making claims like 'President Trump is sending in his personal army, and it's an occupation army, and this is the beginning of fascism,'" Yoo said.

Now that Barr has the public stage of the Congressional hearings, he can explain to U.S. citizens why it is important to have federal agents protecting federal property and workers.

"I think it's going to be actually better for the American people to be able to hear from Attorney General Barr in a forum like that so they can really see that these policies are well-grounded and justified," Yoo said.

Yoo added, "I'm very supportive of President Trump and the attorney general trying to restore order in our cities by . . . using legitimate federal power to protect federal buildings, to enforce federal law and to protect the constitutional rights of citizens if the state and local governments don't do their job protecting public health and safety."
