House Speaker Paul Ryan's endorsement of Donald Trump Thursday will bring out more Republicans in "tying the party together," former White House Chief of Staff John Sununu told Newsmax TV.

"I can understand Paul trying to take it step by step," Sununu, the former New Hampshire governor who served President George H.W. Bush, told "The Steve Malzberg Show" in an interview.

"There was no time table or time pressure to do it immediately," he continued. "You're going to see a lot of folks coming out — some slowly, some more quickly than others — and tying the party together.

"The party is really looking at not just the presidency; it's looking at the impact of the presidency in undoing what [President Barack] Obama has left us after seven years of a mess.

"It's looking at the presidency, and perhaps being there to give us three Supreme Court judges over the next four years," Sununu said. "It's looking, frankly, at the down-ballot tickets — governors and state legislatures, congressmen — to try and provide the framework of a party going forward.

"So, it's a complicated thing — and every individual has to look at it in the context of their particular situation."
