John Mica: State, Local Governments Must Prep for Ebola

By    |   Monday, 27 Oct 2014 11:03 AM

State and local governments must take Ebola precautions into their own hands since the federal government is not prepared to deal with it, Rep. John Mica, a Florida Republican, said Monday on "America’s Forum" on Newsmax TV.

"The federal government needs to get its act together and if states and other localities want to put these [precautions] in place and the federal government doesn't, they need to protect themselves," he said. "So far, we've kept the genie in the bottle but we need to be prepared."

After conducting a hearing on the subject last week with Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Republican with whom Mica sits on the House Oversight Committee, Mica noted that "from a report we requested by the inspector general to look at our preparedness capability, we are not, the federal government is not prepared. It's somewhat disorganized still and we don't have answers to how we would keep the Americans safe at the federal level. That's why we've seen states, leaders from both parties step up and say these people do need to be quarantined when they come into the United States."

Quarantining travelers from West Africa is a necessary precaution, not a political tool, to stop the deadly virus from spreading, he added.

"We don't want to deter anyone from going over and helping, but if they have been exposed, particularly healthcare workers … they need to be quarantined," he said. "We've seen with the doctor who just returned, we're very fortunate he self-reported. But he went to the airport, he was tested, and the symptoms aren’t always clear, even when they're tested at the airport. So those protocols are not working.

"We saw again the guidance that was sent out, supposedly sent out by the government to first responders. That's not working. We saw New York police officers taking their masks and gloves off and putting into a trash can. So we've got to make certain that against we check the American people and we're not talking about inconveniencing that many people."

He also briefly touched on lone wolf jihadists targeting military and law enforcement, such as the two deadly incidents in Canada last week and the hatchet-wielding attack on New York police officers. Partnering with mosques and/or monitoring activities there is "one way" of combating these jihadists, "but we do know that many of these people have indicated they want to join radical forces," he said.

"I'm getting a mind that these people want to go to the Mideast and help that cause, we ought to buy them a one-way ticket, get them out of here."
