Rep. McGuire to Newsmax: Work Remains on Healthcare Legislation

By    |   Friday, 19 December 2025 09:03 AM EST

There is still more work to do after House Republicans approved a healthcare package aimed at lowering costs without extending expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies, Rep. John McGuire told Newsmax on Friday.

"We basically had ten bills that we passed into one bill last week, and it helps healthcare be affordable, not just for the 7% that are part of the Affordable Care Act program, but all Americans," the Virginia Republican told Newsmax's "Wake Up America Early."

The plan, if it becomes law, will allow Americans form larger insurance pools to lower premiums.

"I was in the Virginia House of Delegates," said McGuire. "I paid probably three or four hundred dollars a month for healthcare, because all government employees in Virginia were able to pool their resources and lower the cost."

Meanwhile, the cost of the ACA, or "Obamacare," has been going up 26% every year, said McGuire.

"The insurance companies are getting a 600% pay raise," he said. "I mean, who gets a 600% pay raise?”

The Republicans' program, however, will lower people's costs by 11% per year, he pointed out.

"We're trending it down, making things more affordable and giving you more coverage and more control of your healthcare," said McGuire.

Asked about Democrats' messaging heading into the 2026 midterms, McGuire said Democrats are "pretty slick at messaging," but said Republicans did not back the Affordable Care Act and opposed making pandemic-era subsidies permanent. He said the current system is "unsustainable."

"The average family pays $26,000 a year in healthcare premiums, and that's just unsustainable," he said.

McGuire also backed President Donald Trump's view of the economy and cited what he said were lower fuel prices in Virginia.

"On Dec. 7 in Roanoke, Virginia, a constituent sent me a screenshot of $1.89 a gallon fuel at the Circle K gas station in Roanoke," he said.

McGuire also outlined a housing proposal he said he has worked on with allies in Washington that would defer capital gains taxes for some older landlords who sell rental properties to first-time homebuyers, aiming to increase supply.

"If you're age 65 or older and you sell your rental property to a first-time buyer, not BlackRock, not China, not a corporation, but to an American citizen, first-time buyer, there's a five-year moratorium on capital gains," he said.

"Home ownership gives you stability and the ability to raise a family and a future," the congressman noted.
