Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval withdrew his name from consideration for the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday, but that was not the case two days ago, best-selling author and political journalist John Fund told Newsmax TV.

"He had already had dinner with President Barack Obama," Fund, a columnist for The National Review, told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth. "He had meetings with Senate Minority Leader [Harry] Reid, the whole gang."

The Senate must stand firm on not holding any hearings on any nominee by Obama, Fund told Hayworth.

"The Republican base realizes that this November, not only is the presidency at stake, but the direction of the Supreme Court," he said. "Were the Republicans to do that, they will be guaranteeing a dramatic lowering of their base turnout.

"People would become very disillusioned with them even more so than now — and that could take several senators with them and might cost the Republicans the Senate," Fund added. "They have to stick to their guns."
