Rep. Jodey Arrington, R-Texas, told Newsmax TV on Friday that the call for more oversight of the coronavirus response is “purely political” and “reeks of impeachment 3.0."
Arrington, who sits on the House Ways and Means Committee, noted that “all of us want more input in the process” when it comes to the bills Congress has passed to deal with the crisis caused by the coronavirus outbreak.
“All of us want more due diligence," he told John Bachman during an appearance on Newsmax Now, adding, "We have eight different oversight committees, so I'd take strong disagreement and exception with people that think we need another commission.”
Arrington continued, “I think it’s purely political, I think it reeks of impeachment 3.0. So, I don’t think we don’t have the oversight infrastructure in place.”
The congressman added that “we’re in a crisis” and have “got to do some things differently, and that should be understandable. There are people, they're sucking air, they can't get up off their knees and back into the game.”
“The best thing we can do for this country is open up the economy,” he said.
“It's time to start phasing back in, as we see the numbers flatten we can throw a lifeline in the form of bridge loans. I think that's responsible. We require in those bridge loans that people connect their employees to the payroll so we get them off, or keep them off, of the unemployment roles,” which he admits is “not perfect,” but said “it is necessary in a situation like this.”
