Jim McLaughlin to Newsmax: Inflation, Healthcare Tanking Dems' Numbers

By    |   Friday, 19 December 2025 10:20 AM EST

Congressional Democrats' political standing is sliding because of voter frustration over inflation and rising healthcare costs, Jim McLaughlin, a pollster for President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign, told Newsmax on Friday.

"They are abysmal," McLaughlin told Newsmax's "Wake Up America," while citing a recent report on approval ratings for the Democrats.

"If you looked at among men and among independents, the Democratic approval rating was even worse. It was only 15%," he added. "They are a disaster."

A Quinnipiac poll released Thursday showed that just 18% of voters approve of how congressional Democrats are handling their job, while 73% disapprove, for a record low.

McLaughlin also criticized Democrats for leaning into healthcare as a campaign message and tied the issue to the Affordable Care Act.

"You know the interesting part, what I thought was amazing the other day was former President Barack Obama told a group of people that they should be running on healthcare," McLaughlin said.

"And you think about it, he's the one who 15 years ago gave us this disaster that's Obamacare," he said.

McLaughlin added that Democrats misled voters when the law was sold to the public.

"Remember, they lied about everything," he said. "You could keep your ... doctor, you could keep your insurance. They told us it was going to cut costs by $2,500."

McLaughlin said Democrats have failed to address inflation and healthcare affordability, while Republicans have offered alternatives.

"We see how every day our healthcare costs go up," McLaughlin said. "And the Democrats have no clue how to bring down inflation. They have no clue how to bring down healthcare costs."

He pointed to a GOP plan and cited a claim that it would lower premiums.

"The Republicans put out a good plan, just as [Maryland GOP Rep.] Andy Harris said it would ... decrease premiums by about 11%," McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin also rejected claims that President Donald Trump is facing record disapproval, saying his polling shows Trump in stronger shape and ahead of Democrats on top voter issues.

"They love pointing out, you know, they say, 'Oh, well, Donald Trump has these record disapproval ratings.' It's not true," McLaughlin said. "[According to] Our last national poll of likely voters, he has a 50% approval rating."

McLaughlin said Trump is running ahead of Democrats on issues he said matter most to voters.

"When you look at President Donald Trump versus the Democrats on the issues that people care about most, the economy, things like immigration and inflation, Donald Trump has significant advantages over the Democrats," he said.
