Michael Reagan is pushing back hard on President Donald Trump's decision not to attend the opening of the new U.S. embassy in Israel next week.
"I think it's silly for him not to attend; he's the one that said move it," Reagan told Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now" on Monday.
Trump advocated for the U.S. embassy to be moved from Tel Aviv, which serves as Israel's industrial hub, to Jerusalem, a controversial move because it essentially recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The ancient city is one of the most disputed spots on the planet, with both Israel and Palestine claiming it as their capital.
Politics, religious differences, and ongoing strife made Trump's decision not a popular one. Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, and presidential advisers Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner — Trump's daughter and son-in-law — will represent the administration at the May 14 opening.
"He should be there, he shouldn't have sent surrogates to do a man's job," Reagan said.

Regarding the Iran nuclear deal, about which Trump will make an announcement Tuesday, Reagan said the White House has done the public a disservice by not explaining the complex agreement that was set up to prevent Iran from creating a nuclear weapon.
"What is it 10 years? They get a free ride. After that it's over, [Iran] can go nuclear," Reagan said. "So what? We're gonna put off a nuclear holocaust from one year to 10 years? A nuclear problem is a nuclear problem, whether it's now to 10 years from now, and it's not been sold to the American public to understand how disastrous this is for the world.
"I think that's been a huge mistake on the part of the administration."
