Minnesota voters should decide whether Democrat Al Franken remains in the Senate amid sexual-assault allegations because "it's the American people in the states who elect the United States senators," former Reagan aide Jeffrey Lord told Newsmax TV on Friday.

"We lose track of the fact that it's not senators in Washington who really run the Senate," Lord told Miranda Khan in an interview on "America Talks Live."

"This is most properly something that has to be decided between Al Franken and the voters of Minnesota.

"If he has to wait out his term until that happens and decide whether to run or not —and wants to stand and defend himself — that's his choice," Lord said.

"And the voters will have their own choice."
