Americans must watch their backs anywhere they travel in the world — as the threat of radical Islamic violence grows, former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik tells Newsmax TV.

Kerik issued his warning on "Newsmax Prime," as he and host J.D. Hayworth discussed the alarming disappearance of three Americans in Iraq after they allegedly were kidnapped at gunpoint.

"The American people don't get it and they don't understand it but that's the reality that we live in," Kerik said.

"That Americans anywhere in the world today have a target on their head by this radical Islamic movement."

Last Friday, gunmen took three American contractors from an apartment in Baghdad's southeastern Dora neighborhood, sources told CNN.

A source told CNN two of three missing contractors are dual Iraqi-American citizens, and the third is an American national.

Their whereabouts are unknown.

Kerik said one of the most dangerous figures in Iraq now is radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

"There's no greater enemy to the government of Iraq … He's been problematic for years now. He's still there, still in charge, and I'm confident that he was sort of behind this."
