Carter Andress: We Left Iraq Ill-Trained for Enemy Like ISIS

By    |   Friday, 24 Oct 2014 12:56 PM

The Iraqi army was left half-trained, which is one of the reasons the Middle Eastern country has struggled to fight against the Islamic State (ISIS), says Carter Andress, who worked as a government contractor in Iraq.

"We haven't been defeated yet in this, but the reality is that we left the Iraqi army and security services half-trained," Andress, the president and principle owner of AISG Inc., told J.D. Hayworth on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV Friday.

"We trained them in counterinsurgency tactics," he said, adding that "these are basically up-armored police tactics with SWAT tactics thrown in, and as a result they were unprepared definitely for an external invasion from Syria."

"There was never any concept in anyone's mind even when we withdrew the troops in 2011 that we would leave Iraq unsupported," he said.

"They have no air force," he added. "Can you imagine that neighborhood having no air force, no defense?"

According Andress, a government contractor who has worked on the reconstruction of Iraq, "We all imagined that we would be there with them if something like this happened, and that's where the real error is at this point in time, I believe."

Andress is author of the 2007 book, "Contractor Combatants: Tales of an Imbedded Capitalist," and his latest book, "Victory Undone: The Defeat of al-Qaeda in Iraq and Its Resurrection as ISIS," which was released Monday.
