Ric Grenell to Newsmax TV: Trump's Twitter Block a 'Slippery Slope'

The decisions of Twitter and other major social media sites to block President Donald Trump after Wednesday's riots at the Capitol won't end well because such censorship will be a "slippery slope that is going to burn every single person," former ambassador Ric Grenell said on Newsmax TV Saturday.

"It's telling that big tech waited until Donald Trump was about to leave office and the Republicans were no longer in control of the Senate before they made their move," Grenell told Newsmax TV's Rob Schmitt on "The Count."

But while many Democrats are cheering because Trump has been blocked, they really should be careful, said Grenell, because such actions "put the power in big tech's hands to decide what is acceptable dialogue."

Grenell added that Twitter is being hypocritical with its moves.

"They allow the Iranian regime to be on Twitter," he said. "They allow all of the regime members who lead it to be spouting off about Israel, against gay people, all sorts of vile content. Twitter allows that, but at the same time, the Iranian regime is not allowing the Iranian people to be on Twitter now. How is that abiding by the community standards that Twitter has set up?"

He also spoke out about the cancel culture in play with social media and said it is getting out of hand.

"We should be able to listen to each other's content or tweets, Facebook posts without immediately unfriending or canceling," said Grenell. "I think that it goes back to our academic institutions teaching this for a long time. We have lost a generation of kids who are able to articulate their point of view and listen to somebody else's point of view."

Meanwhile, Grenell also discussed the reaction to the violence at the Capitol, saying that no matter where such events occur, they must be called out, but added that there has only been "one side" consistently calling out rioting.

Still, he said, "we cannot have a political dialogue that all of a sudden becomes or political protest that all of a sudden becomes violent," said Grenell. "That's unacceptable and we have had a lot of people call it out on the Republican side. We've had very few people call it out consistently on both sides."
