Texas Gov. Abbott: Constitutional Convention Needed, Congress 'Not Doing Its Job'

By    |   Tuesday, 12 January 2016 07:40 PM EST

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott told Newsmax TV on Tuesday that a convention of states is necessary because "we have a Congress that is not doing its job."

"Under the Constitution, it is Congress under Article I that is assigned the duty of passing laws in this country — and yet more than 90 percent of the laws in this country are not passed by Congress," Abbott, a Republican who was most recently the Lone Star State's attorney general, told "The Steve Malzberg Show" in an interview.

"Instead, they are passed by administrative agencies that are unaccountable and unelectable," he said.

The United States also has an unaccountable Supreme Court that also passes laws.

"We have 27 amendments to the United States Constitution and yet the Constitution is amended every single year by unelected five judges on the United States Supreme Court," Abbott said. "The way government is taking place in the United States right now is contrary to the way the founders structured it, the way the architects of the Constitution structured it."
