Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell told Newsmax TV on Wednesday he disagreed with former President Jimmy Carter's call President Barack Obama to recognize Palestine as a state before Donald Trump takes office in January.

"I respect President Carter," Mitchell, the longtime Maine Democrat who was majority leader from 1989 to 1995, tells "The Steve Malzberg Show." "He was a major contributor to peace in the region.

"He broke the agreement between Israel and Egypt, which stands today. It is a foundation of Israel's foreign policy — and security is very important in the region.

"The Palestinian-Israeli agreement would be a third pillar of stability in the region."

However, "on this issue, I don't agree with President Carter," Mitchell said.

Mitchell is the co-author of the new book, "A Path to Peace: A Brief History of Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations and a Way Forward in the Middle East," with Alon Sachar.

In an op-ed piece in The New York Times on Monday, Carter said Obama should recognize Palestine because Trump's involvement in the Mideast peace process could "destroy Israeli democracy and . . . result in intensifying international condemnation of Israel."

Mitchell told Malzberg that Obama doing so would reverse longstanding American policy on "final-status issues" between Israel and the Palestinians.

"Those [issues] are left to be determined by the two parties in negotiation," he said. "For the United States now to say we recognize Palestine would be a reversal of what has been American policy for several years."

"The United States is the world's dominant power," Mitchell continued. "It will play a decisive role in whatever happens in that region.

"We should continue the policy that we've had to try to encourage the parties to negotiate a two-state solution — at which time, if successful, there will be not just a nominal Palestinian state, but a real Palestinian state."
