Ex-FBI Agent: Government Struggles to Keep Up With Technology

By    |   Wednesday, 22 Oct 2014 04:52 PM

It is becoming a growing concern that the government is struggling to keep up with advancing technology that could keep law enforcement from being able to do its job, says Weysan Dun, former FBI special agent.

"Technology is advancing so rapidly and capabilities are being developed faster than we can develop the legal counter-measures to those capabilities," Dun told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"What's prompted the current level of concern is the announcement by some companies that they intend to develop and enable encryption, for which even they have no key," he explained.

"That is a real problem because what you're doing is saying we're going to develop a lock that can never be opened except by one person," he said.

"If that person happens to lose the key or forgets it, nobody can get to it," he contends.

"That would be a problem because there are circumstances where under court authority, law enforcement has a very legitimate need to gain access to information," he added.

According to Dun, who is now principal at the Dun Global Solutions, "if there is truly encryption for which no key exists and the only individual that can get access to that refuses, law enforcement potentially can be in a really bad position and lives can potentially be endangered."

"If the key to someone's safety, if the key to solving a crime, the key to rescuing for example, a kidnapped victim, might be locked in a suspect's phone and even with a court order you can't get to it, then you're putting lives in danger," he explained.
