Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, told Newsmax TV on Tuesday that "I am just flabbergasted that this is even a story" regarding Donald Trump Jr.'s emails on Russia.

"I've been involved in so many campaigns," DeLay, who served in the post from 2003 to 2005, told "Newsmax Now" host Bill Tucker.

"Every campaign, especially every winning campaign, has an opposition research component to it.

"You research your opponent," he explained. "You go anywhere, anytime, talk to anybody to get anything on your opponent, so you can paint the picture of your opponent in the campaign.

"That's what this is. The media is treating this as if it's some scandal.

"This is getting so out of control," DeLay told Tucker. "It is nothing.

"They met with someone. They probably thought she had some information on Hillary Clinton.

"They discussed their options, but it was a 15-minute meeting and nothing came of it.

"What about Hillary Clinton?" he posed. "Has she talked to the Russians about Donald Trump?"
