Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Calif., told Newsmax on Friday that California Gov. Gavin Newsom's proposed 28th Amendment that would restrict gun ownership is "laughable."
Newsom on Thursday proposed a 28th constitutional amendment that would raise the minimum age to buy a firearm to 21 and ban the purchase of assault weapons by civilians, among other measures.
LaMalfa said on "National Report" that "this is laughable, especially since most of these pieces that he has in his idea have already been found unconstitutional time and time again."
He added: "They're being fought off by red states and the areas where they have some of these controls in place, the blue states and the large cities; they have the highest crime rate and the highest problem with people committing murder. Look at Chicago. Look at any of the large cities. They seem to have the most gun control."
LaMalfa added, "This guy is also emptying our prisons and making it more and more difficult for local [district attorneys] and law enforcement to do their job by putting these criminals back on the street.
"They don't even follow up and prosecute on people trying to purchase over the counter that have no business buying guns to begin with.
"So it's a complete hypocrisy and almost laughable that we're even having this conversation."
