Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., told Newsmax TV he is holding firm in his decision to run for one of the state's senate seats in a special primary against another Republican Kelly Loeffler.

Collins also called out National Republican Senatorial Committee executive director Kevin McLaughlin for suggesting that he "go to political hell."

"I think the Senatorial Committee would do a lot better if they were focusing on other areas as well instead of attacking me and attacking my character," Collins told Wednesday's "Spicer & Co." "I'm not going to forget it, and I know the people of Georgia are not going to forget it."

The Senatorial Committee has thrown its full support behind the incumbent Loeffler, and became angered when Collins announced he would run.

"These same people who are now assigning blame to me — especially as someone who's a chaplain, who's a pastor — to assign a heaven and hell kind of emphasis, that's a little bit too much," Collins said.

Even though the Senatorial Committee opposes his primary bid, Collins said people in the state have given him their overwhelming support.

An internal poll of registered voters released in early April by the Georgia congressman shows that Collins has 36% support compared to just 13% for Loeffler.

"When you look at the poll numbers here in Georgia, when you look at the fundraising number actually today, when you look at the fact that Sen. Loeffler is struggling and will not win, I think the folks at the [National Republican] Senatorial Committee are going to realize the only people who should be glad about me getting in is them."
