Donald Trump is still the master of the art of the deal when it comes to leading the GOP pack following Thursday's Republican presidential debate — but he has a lot of work to do if he wants to remain the front-runner, veteran pollster John Zogby tells Newsmax TV.

"Donald Trump went in leading and leading big. He continues to lead big," Zogby said Friday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"He still has to show that he can expand a base and run in a general election and not just appeal to a narrow, angry segment of voters."

Zogby, CEO of Zogby Analytics, said a few of the other nine candidates will probably see an uptick from the debate.

"Particularly [Ohio Gov.] John Kasich, who did quite well and asserted himself really above his group of people."

Zogby also addressed the anger expressed by some Republicans that the Fox moderators were unfairly rough on some of the candidates, particularly Trump.

"Probably the likely Republican voters would be alienated by the questions that were asked, but we were all informed by it," he said.

Zogby said that new polling shows that Democrats, by 48 to 34 percent, want Vice President Joe Biden to challenge Hillary Clinton.

"Also, in head-to-head match-ups against some of the key Republicans, not only does Biden do a little bit better, but he does better among Hispanics and African-Americans. That's not a good sign for the best known candidate in the world," he said.
