President-elect Donald Trump can expect some Republicans to join Democrats in attacking him regularly once he begins governing, former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Pete Hoekstra told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"As you start moving into the presidency, he will make some mistakes — and there will be some Republicans at that point in time who will take the opportunity to pile on and potentially slow this momentum," the former Michigan Republican told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth.

"He's doing all the right things right now," Hoekstra added. "Some of those Republicans that may, sometime in the future or right, think that they can pile on and slow this train down and stop the draining of the swamp — they're going to go back and have second thoughts about whether that was really a good idea.

"What Trump showed during the campaign is that this guy has an unbelievable ability to connect with the American voters in a way that most politicians in Washington have not been able to do in recent years."

Hoekstra, the Shillman senior fellow at the Investigative Project on Terrorism in Washington, is author of "Architects of Disaster: The Destruction of Libya."
