Politico's Berman: Obama Using Presidency for Politics

By    |   Wednesday, 18 June 2014 07:58 PM EDT

President Barack Obama is using executive orders to shore up his legacy and get Democratic voters to help him preserve it by stopping a Republican takeover of the Senate this fall, Politico White House Editor Dan Berman told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

White House edicts on power plant emissions, the minimum wage, workplace discrimination and student loans — "these are all designed to get the Democratic base excited," Berman told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner.

He added, "I'm not really sure it's going to be enough."

Berman said that bypassing Congress to issue new federal rules and policy changes doesn't necessarily help the president's party in home-state races.

"Midterm elections, they aren't national elections," said Berman. "Will this sort of thing be enough to get [Sen.] Mark Begich re-elected in Alaska, to get [Sen.] Mark Pryor re-elected in Arkansas? So, many of the Senate races are still local races."
