Michael Reagan: GOP Stands to Benefit More With DACA Deal

Enacting some form of the rescinded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy is far more important for the health of the Republican Party than it is for Democrats, Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV.

"It's more critical to the Republican Party . . . to prove that they aren't anti-Hispanic, anti-immigrant," Reagan, a veteran political commentator and son of Ronald Reagan, told host Miranda Khan on Tuesday's "America Talks Live."

"When they pass and if they pass something that, in fact, deals with DACA, [they] can stand on a very higher level to the Democrats who – when they had a full majority in the House, and the Senate and the White House – did not pass any immigration reform when they could have.

"So, I think the Republicans are in a much better place with DACA if it gets passed than the Democrats will ever be."

Reagan said when his father signed legislation that allowed 3 million undocumented Hispanics illegals to have a path to American citizenship, "the other side of the coin was the Democrats promised to shore up the border. Well the Democrats . . . never held to their side of the bargain."

And now President Donald Trump, Reagan said, is getting heat for wanting to build a U.S.-Mexico border wall to finish what the Democrats never did under his father.

"We're all for allowing these children to become American citizens or at least legal, but you have to, this time, do your side," Reagan said.

"You have to, in fact, allow us, with your help, to shore up that border and do something so we don't face again in the future what we're facing now, because the Democrats didn't do what they were supposed to do back in the 1980s."

Reagan said if his dad was in charge now, "what he would have done very simply is bring everybody to the White House and [say] let's find an area of immigration reform that we all can agree on – and if it's DACA, fine, it's DACA.

"Pass that, give it to the president, allow him to sign it, and then come back to the president later on with all the other issues. What happens is so many games are played [now] that nothing gets done," he said.

"I'm one of those people who believed that if you are brought here by your parents as a child, and you've grown up in the United States of America, you need to find a way to be legally in the United States . . . I know that's how my father would've taken it, and he would've done something about it."

Reagan is the author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan," with Jim Denney contributing and published by Humanix Books.

Despite the Democrats claiming ownership of saving DACA, it is the Republicans who stand to benefit more politically if a deal to save the program is struck in Congress, Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.
