Both of the major political parties are in turmoil regarding the presidential campaign, which makes it difficult to predict which party will come out victorious in November, says Ronald Reagan biographer Craig Shirley.
During an appearance on
Newsmax TV's "The Hard Line," the New York Times best-selling author says the remainder of the campaign season will be "interesting."
"United conventions tend to win in the fall. This is going to be interesting because both conventions are going to be united," says Shirley. "So it's going to be a question of which party patches things up the best and which puts their problems behind them and which promotes and or projects a unified front to the American people is more likely to be the winning party.
"But right now looking at Philadelphia and Cleveland from our vantage point, it looks like both parties are in the state of perpetual civil war right now and they're never going to patch up their differences."

No candidate from either party has wrapped up the nomination, and it's unclear if that will happen before this summer's conventions. That means anything can happen — deals can be made among candidates and delegates, says Shirley, while a figure
who is not even in the race could emerge as the party's presidential pick.
"Delegates … don't always have lofty thoughts about the country and the party and the future," Shirley says. "Some of them just want rides on Air Force One or be invited to the White House for a state dinner. So you have to figure out what each of these delegates wants."
