Rep. Comer to Newsmax: What Did Bidens Do to Receive Millions?

By    |   Wednesday, 10 January 2024 08:49 PM EST

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., insisted on Newsmax, Wednesday that "Hunter Biden doesn't get to dictate the rules," vowing to move forward with a contempt of Congress citation for President Joe Biden's son for his refusal to sit for a deposition over his foreign financial transactions.

Comer's comments on "Rob Schmitt Tonight" came following a day in which Hunter Biden appeared unannounced at a meeting of the Oversight Committee, declaring he was prepared to testify in an open hearing — after refusing to sit before members and attorneys for questioning in a deposition.

The hearing at times appeared chaotic, with Democrats demonstratively demanding the committee question Hunter Biden then and there.

"We have hundreds of questions to ask Hunter Biden, and you can't do that in a public hearing," Comer said. "After we do the deposition, then Hunter Biden could come in for a public hearing. I want a public hearing, and the American people want to public hearing.

"But we have to ask him specific questions. There are too many transactions. There are too many suspicious activity reports filed on money the Bidens received from our enemies around the world.

"We have to spend hours and hours and hours asking the substantive questions with charts, with spreadsheets and everything else, and that's what we're going to do. Hunter Biden doesn't get to dictate the rules."

Hunter Biden briefly attended Wednesday's hearing after appearing but refusing to testify at a Dec. 13 deposition over his involvement with foreign corporations. Documents and public comments from others suggest he was paid for access to his father, who was vice president at the time.

Joe Biden initially denied knowing anything about his son's business dealings, although the White House and Hunter Biden have since softened that denial and associates of Hunter Biden have contradicted some of their claims.

"That's what the American people want to know: What did the Bidens do to receive the tens of millions of dollars, received from our enemies around the world?" Comer asked rhetorically. "The Democrats, in all of their filibustering today and all of their debates and all of their falsehoods, they never once said what legitimate business purpose the Bidens had.

"They talked about [former President Donald] Trump. They talked about money that Trump made in his hotel from foreign dignitaries who spent the night in the hotel. But they never could explain what the Bidens did to receive the money, and this is very important. This is an issue of national security.

"Are the Democrats going to tell the American people it's OK if you're president of the United States, and you're a Democrat, to sell access to the Chinese or the Romanians or the Ukrainians or the Russians?

"Because that's what it looks like Joe Biden did. And the fact that the White House continues to lie about Joe Biden's knowledge and involvement, participation in his family's shady business schemes doesn't help the situation where the majority of American people think that Joe Biden is a crook and that he was directly involved in these schemes."
