Rep. Doug Collins: Transfer Secret Service Back to Treasury

By    |   Friday, 03 October 2014 03:04 PM EDT

It may be time to transfer management of the Secret Service from Homeland Security to the Treasury Department, which successfully supervised it for years, U.S. Rep. Doug Collins says.

"It's beginning to at least appear that way," Collins, a Georgia Republican told Rick Ungar and John Fund, guest hosts of "The Steve Malzberg Show" Friday on Newsmax TV.

Collins, a member of the House Oversight and House Government Reform Committees, grilled Julia Pierson, the Secret Service director who quit following disturbing security gaffes involving President Barack Obama.

In one, a knife-wielding intruder managed to jump the fence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and enter the White House before being stopped.

Collins said he asked Collins if the Secret Service had become "part of a bureaucratic maze" of Homeland Security after management was transferred from the Treasury Department.

If that turns out to be the case, "that needs to change," Collins said. "That's going to become a topic that's going to be brought up real soon."

Collins called the questioning of Pierson on Capitol Hill, "a train wreck."

"It was a tragedy to the American people to see the director of the Secret Service whose main job in life is to protect our president and his family," he said.

"They basically told us they had a major mess up and really didn't want to tell anybody about it. It was just a terrible day, especially for the Secret Service.

"I can't say this enough, President Obama, his wife and his kids deserve to be protected and we had a major lapse."

On the progress of the U.S.-led coalition now conducting airstrikes against the Islamic State, Collins said: "You're dealing with a terrorist organization. It's coming together. Is it there yet? No … But we are making strides to curve what is a very dangerous international terrorist organization."
