Rep. Ciscomani to Newsmax: Bill Has Spending Cuts, Border Security

By    |   Saturday, 13 January 2024 12:47 PM EST

Rep. Juan Ciscomani, R-Ariz., spoke to Newsmax's "America Right Now" on Saturday, shedding light on the details of the recent House bill, particularly focusing on border security and spending cuts.

Ciscomani reminded everyone of the proposed continuing resolution (CR) on Sept. 29, 2023, emphasizing the significant portion dedicated to border security. He highlighted the efforts of members like Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and others who championed the CR, only to be voted down due to internal divisions within the Republican party.

"This is a product of months ... of work and negotiations, but also, quite honestly, months in the lost-time bucket as well, because the House really lost a lot of time and wasted a lot of time with fights that lead to nowhere," Ciscomani stated.

Regarding negotiations with Democrats, Ciscomani pointed out a $16 billion reduction in overall spending. He stressed that Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., successfully navigated the political dynamics to prioritize border issues without complete Republican control in the Senate and White House.

"I gotta tell you, given the current political dynamics here in the House, in Washington — but also the political reality of not having the Senate and the White House — and the House Republicans, in this case, being the sole member wanting these further cuts and strong ... border security, the speaker has been able to negotiate the best thing possible that could actually make it through and prioritize [the] border."

Reflecting on his recent visit to Eagle Pass, Texas, Ciscomani noted that according to Border Patrol, policy changes are as crucial as funding in addressing border challenges. He emphasized that the funding would be ineffective without the necessary policy adjustments.

"It's not so much the funding piece that they're looking for. It's the policy changes that they're looking for. Without those policy changes, none of this funding would work," he said.

When asked about the House Republicans initiating impeachment proceedings against Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Ciscomani expressed a strong belief in the necessity of impeachment. He cited his observations at the border, stating that the crisis is evident and that Mayorkas has neglected his duties.

"I strongly believe that Alejandro Mayorkas needs to be impeached, and that needs to happen immediately," Ciscomani asserted. He underscored the desperation on the ground, including Border Patrol agents, business owners, ranchers, and community leaders, all demanding immediate action. Ciscomani accused Mayorkas of ignoring the crisis and failing to address the pressing issues.

"All the evidence shows that he has been neglecting his job and doing nothing to actually address the crisis that we have," he said.
