Even President Donald Trump, in the midst of a fight for the White House, has noticed viewers leaving Fox News and tuning into Newsmax TV, Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy said Thursday following a phone call with the president from the Oval Office.
"It was the first thing he mentioned," Ruddy, a friend of the president, said during a Thursday appearance on Newsmax’s "The Chris Salcedo Show."
"He said he thought it was terrific," Ruddy said. "He was quite critical of Fox News. He said, 'Everybody's telling me that I'm turning off Fox and going to Newsmax.'"
Ruddy noted that the channel has over 700,000 per-minute viewers and is beating Fox Business and CNBC combined in almost every daypart. Downloads of its app from the Apple App Store are also soaring.
Newsmax TV is not as big as Fox, Ruddy noted, but when adding in all the people who watch the programming on OTT platforms like YouTube, Roku or other devices, "we're getting over a million people a minute at night tuning into Newsmax," Ruddy said. "It's a huge, huge thing, and the president was very, very happy about that."
Trump is less happy about the election results, which he is challenging, Ruddy said, noting the close totals in multiple states.
Major news organizations have called the election for former Vice President Joe Biden.
Newsmax is not calling the election yet because there are close contests in several states where the president is challenging results.
Ruddy said Newsmax is waiting for those states to certify the results and the winners before projecting the president-elect who will be confirmed by the electoral college in December.
"Remember this is the same press that said in their polls that Joe Biden was going to win by a landslide eight to 10 points — everyone from CNN to even Fox News," Ruddy said, "and they all were wrong."
Now they say there is no real evidence of voter fraud, he noted, though there is at least anecdotal evidence.
"We don't know how widespread it is. Part of it is they're not allowing the Trump team to properly investigate and review the ballots," Ruddy said, adding that the president has also raised questions about Dominion Voting Systems software used in several states.
"This is America," Ruddy said. "The New York Times says Newsmax is guilty of voter denial. … We're just saying it should be investigated."
